Apr. 23—A German-inspired beer garden and restaurant serving craft beer and locally sourced food is slated to open this spring in downtown Skowhegan.
The Biergarten, a 125-seat venue, will be located in the Spinning Mill, a mixed-use development at 7 Island Ave., which also includes a 21-room boutique hotel and 41 apartments. The Biergarten space, on track to open in early June, features indoor and outdoor patio seating and also a performance stage.
The bar program includes local craft beer along with cocktails, mocktails and German wines. The food menu will rely on locally sourced ingredients for dishes including chicken schnitzel, German-style sausages, soft pretzels, sauerkrauts and pickles. The head chef is Erik Levine, who also heads up the kitchen at The Miller’s Table at Maine Grains in Skowhegan.
The Miller’s Table at Maine Grains owns and will operate The Biergarten. The leadership team expects the new venue to host a variety of themed events throughout the year, including Oktoberfest, a November Lanternfest at which children can craft their own paper lanterns and parade through The Biergarten, pretzel-making workshops for kids, weekly live music performances, storytelling, puppet shows and more.
“We’re building more than a restaurant — we’re creating an experience that people will want to come back to again and again,” said Jen Olsen, hospitality manager at The Biergarten.
