After shooting at passersby and police officers, a man was shot dead by police near Stuttgart on Saturday.
The 44-year-old reportedly fired indiscriminately at passers-by, the building opposite and the street from the top floor of his house in Leonberg, the Stuttgart public prosecutor’s office and the Baden-Württemberg State Office of Criminal Investigation (LKA) said in a joint statement.
The assailant also fired shots at police officers. No-one was injured.
The man, identified only as a German national, had retreated to a flat to which a special task force had gained access, it was further reported.
The 44-year-old is said to have threatened the officers with a firearm. The police then shot the man. He reportedly died on the spot.
The officers seized the man’s weapon – it was a blank firing weapon.
Whether he had used this or another weapon to fire from the building is still being investigated.
The state criminal police office (LKA)is investigating the police’s use of firearms. No further information was initially available.
