Mayor Adams gave his endorsement to a weekend golf course outing between two top city officials and President Trump, saying he thinks his top deputy, Randy Mastro, should hit the links as well.
“A lot of great deals have been made on the golf course, and I thank the two of them for doing it, and I would encourage anyone else that can have an opportunity to do so, to do so,” Adams said of the meeting at a New Jersey golf course on Sunday.
John Chell, the NYPD’s top chief and Kaz Daughtry, the mayor’s deputy mayor for public safety, spent Sunday afternoon with the president at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.
Adams said that the meet-up was “without a doubt” appropriate, adding that he hopes his First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro plays with Trump, as well.
“I would think having my Chief of Department, my deputy mayor of public safety, to have the two of them to be able to communicate with the President on the golf course and talk about things that are important to us. I’m sure they want to talk about themselves, you know. I’m sure they want to say, what can you do for me?”
The mayor’s comments come amid criticism of Adams over his relationship with Trump in wake of the DOJ’s decision to dismiss Adams’ corruption indictment.
A source previously told the Daily News that there was no talk of politics or the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown during the confab, including events in Los Angeles, where the National Guard has controversially been sent in by Trump. New York is a sanctuary city and can by law only assist the feds in criminal matters, not cases involving only immigration violations.
The two officials posed for photos with Trump, with Daughtry, Mayor Adams’ top public safety deputy at City Hall, writing on Facebook that it was a “fantastic afternoon.” Chell wrote on LinkedIn that there was “good conversation with a few laughs and a great lunch,” and that he put his wife on the phone with the “big guy.”
