Grand Blanc church shooting latest in string of tragedies to hit gathering spaces

Must read

Sunday’s mass shooting at a Grand Blanc church is the latest such violence that has left people injured or dead in public buildings and civic spaces in Michigan and across the nation.

In Michigan:

  • On Aug. 22, police say a man shot and killed his former spouse, Latricia Green, in the basement of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. A 53-year-old Detroit man was taken into custody by police the following day. The shooting happened in an area that is considered a public space that doesn’t require security badge access. It was about a month after a judge granted the 40-year-old Green a PPO against her ex-husband.

  • On June 22, a gunman arrived around 11 a.m. as Sunday services were underway at Wayne’s CrossPointe Community Church, wearing a tactical vest and armed with a long gun and a handgun, when he began firing his weapon outside the church, police said. Several church members thwarted what would have likely been a mass shooting, including one who, driving a pickup truck, saw the suspect in the parking lot and hit him. The gunman was shot dead by church staff members, one of whom was wounded in the gunfire, authorities said. About 150 people were inside the church at the time of the shooting.

  • On March 20, an employee at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital shot and injured a co-worker in a parking garage because, police said, he was angry that he had not been invited to the private funeral for the other worker’s father. Hospital employees hid for several hours waiting for SWAT teams to escort them out, while procedures and treatments were postponed. Nearby schools, day care centers and offices abruptly closed or locked down after police got the call that there was an active shooter at the hospital.

  • On June 15, 2024, a 42-year-old Shelby Township man randomly opened fire on families at a Rochester Hills splash pad, leaving nine people injured. The gunman died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after the mass shooting, police said.

  • On Feb. 13, 2023, a shooter opened fire at Michigan State University’s Berkey Hall and the MSU Union. Three students — Brian Fraser, Arielle Anderson and Alexandria Verner — were killed, and five other students were wounded. The suspect killed himself the night of the shootings after police found him.
