Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) accused House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) of losing “control” during their wild hallway debate this week over the current government shutdown.
Lawler joined McEnany on Fox News’ Saturday in America where he addressed his verbal brawl with Jeffries, whom Lawler accused of being “petrified” of his “far-left base.”
Lawler and Jeffries got into a heated debate inside the U.S. Capitol where Jeffries accused Lawler of “embarrassing” himself and Lawler pushed Jeffries to sign a bill to extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. Democrats have stood firm in their fight for an extension of these subsidies, refusing to support a CR (Continuing Resolution) unless the extensions are added in. Lawler has co-sponsored a bill that would separately extend these credits by a year to avoid Americans being hit with major increases to their health insurance.
Lawler described the fight on Saturday:
He lost control. I mean, he was stuttering, he was stammering, he was yelling, he was angry, and he wasn’t answering any questions. And I was making a very simple point. Look, we voted to pass a clean CR to keep the government funded and open. It’s a position he held 13 times under Joe Biden, and I’m co-sponsor of a bill to extend the ACA tax credits by a year to make sure that Americans don’t see a health care premium spike sign on to the bill, and he wouldn’t do it.
Lawler accused both Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) of being “petrified” of their party’s “far-left base,” citing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani as examples.
“This is about Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer being petrified of their far-left base — AOC, Zoran Mandani, and primary challenges from the left,” he said. “And so they’re trying to show them that they’re fighting, that they are pushing back against President Trump, and that’s really what this is about.”
