A New Jersey man has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for the 2023 fatal shooting of 37-year-old Dennis Davis in Wilmington.

Deontay Willingham, of Bridgeton, New Jersey, approached Davis in the area of East 23rd and North Market streets on June 11, 2023, and struck up a conversation, according to the Delaware Department of Justice.

Willingham proceeded to shoot Davis unprovoked, striking the man twice before stealing a necklace pendant from him. Davis was taken to Christiana Hospital, where he died of his wounds.

The gunman, now 35, was indicted by a grand jury on June 20, 2023, and arrested for an unrelated charge in Pennsylvania on July 5 of that year.
