Heat advisories have been issued for southeastern Pennsylvania and parts of New Jersey.

The region that includes Berks and Chester counties will be under a heat advisory from 11 a.m. Tuesday until 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. The advisory also includes Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon and Monroe counties, as well as Sussex and Warren counties in New Jersey.

The advisory states that heat index values of up to 103 degrees are expected.

A second advisory that includes Montgomery, Delaware and Bucks counties went into effect at 11 a.m. Monday and will last until 8 p.m. Wednesday. It also includes Philadelphia and Burlington, Camden, Mercer, Gloucester in New Jersey and several Delaware counties.

That advisory states that heat index values of up to 104 degrees are expected.

According to the National Weather Service, a high temperature of 94 degrees is slated on Monday in Berks, followed by highs of 96 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Rain showers and thunderstorms may enter the region Wednesday afternoon or evening.

The heat advisories urge residents to take precautions to avoid the potentially serious impacts of the severe weather.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the National Weather Service said in its advisory.

The advisory also encourages people to wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing and to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

The advisory also reminds people to take action when they see symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

“Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location,” it states. “Heat stroke is an emergency — call 911.”
