How to stay cool in the heat

The weather service offers these tips to help stay cool in the heat and prevent illness:

  • Drink plenty of fluids, including water, and avoid alcoholic beverages.

  • Plan strenuous activities during the coolest times of the day, such as in the morning or the evening.

  • Wear lightweight, loose fitting, and light-colored clothing to help stay cool.

  • Eat light meals, such as salads and fruit, that are easier to digest.

  • Use a portable fan to remove heat from a room or to pull in cooler air.

  • Take cool baths or showers.

  • Keep children, people with disabilities, the elderly, pets and others safe during extreme temperatures.
