Jun. 23—The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for residents of the Baltimore area.
The Monday and Tuesday warnings run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The majority of eastern and all of Central Maryland are covered in the advisory. The NWS warns Marylanders to drink plenty of fluids and stay in air-conditioned rooms and out of the sun.

“The key thing is anybody working outdoors, even those working on not outdoors, just in general, stay hydrated,” Connor Belak, an NWS meteorologist, told The Baltimore Sun.
Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of preparedness Monday to “ensure that Maryland is coordinated and poised to protect our people in anticipation of extreme heat and humidity,” he said in a news release.
Maryland Department of Health Secretary Dr. Meena Seshamani recommended in the release to check on those particularly vulnerable to heat, such as young children, older adults and those with chronic diseases.
The governor’s announcement included a list of other precautions such as limiting exercise or outdoor activity between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., wearing sun protection like sunscreen and lightweight clothes, and drinking more liquids regardless of activity level.
Baltimore City’s Health Department also issued a “Code Red” heat alert through Thursday. There are cooling centers across the state open for Marylanders to beat the heat as well.
Local transportation will also be affected by the heat, with Baltimore’s Harbor Connector service operating on a modified schedule Monday, Baltimore’s Department of Transportation said via social media. There will be no service between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., it said. “]
The expected high on Monday is 101 with a heat index — what the temperature feels like to the body — of 110. Conditions are forecast to be sunny with a slight breeze of around 6 mph.
Conditions are likely to remain clear entering Monday night. The low is predicted to be around 80.
Tuesday is expected to be similar to Monday, with a high of 102 and the heat index at 109. Tuesday evening is forecast to be mostly clear with a temperature low of 80 and calm winds.
Wednesday is the first day of the week when the temperature high is expected to be below 100. Conditions are predicted to be sunny with a high around 98, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Partly cloudy conditions should set in Wednesday evening. The low is forecast to be near 77.
The chance of rain will carry into Thursday, with possible showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. The day is expected to be mostly sunny, with a high around 94. In the evening, conditions are predicted to shift to mostly cloudy with a low of 74. A chance of showers and a thunderstorm is expected before 2 a.m.
On Friday, temperatures are predicted to be around 88. Conditions are forecast to be mostly sunny with a chance of showers and a thunderstorm. Mostly cloudy conditions are expected headed into Friday evening, along with a low of 73.
The weekend could bring showers and thunderstorms, with highs in the low 90s on Saturday and Sunday.
