High winds knock out power to thousands in Southern Tier. Track outages near you

Must read

About 4,400 residents in Broome, Tioga, Chenango and Delaware counties were without power Tuesday afternoon, April 15, after a thunderstorm brought high winds through the area.

A power line snapped during the storm around 1:30 p.m., causing a campus-wide power outage at Chenango Valley’s middle school and high school, according to a news release from the district. The campus was put on a hold-in-place until dismissal, by which time local fire departments and NYSEG responded to the damaged power line at the main entrance.

First responders determined the campus was safe for vehicles and walkers. Dismissal for Chenango Valley’s middle and high schools was monitored by local fire companies. The district’s Port Dickinson and Chenango Bridge elementary schools also lost power for a short period before the generator turned on, but students were able to finish out the school day on their regular schedule.

All after-school activities for the middle and high school were canceled Tuesday, April 15. The school day is expected to resume on a normal schedule Wednesday.

The National Weather Service said Tuesday showers and storms were producing winds gusting between 50 and 60 mph. As of 3:50 p.m., NYSEG reported 1,332 customers were without power in Broome County.
