A woman was killed by a hit-and-run driver Tuesday in Jones County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Jamie Salazar, 40, of Hamlin was found dead on the highway Tuesday night, a DPS media release said Thursday. An autopsy has been ordered, and the investigation is ongoing.

About 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, the DPS was notified of a deceased person found lying in the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 83 half a mile north of FM Road 3326, the DPS said. A driver on the highway found the body and alerted law enforcement.

The witness told officials she did not seeing any vehicles in the area, was unfamiliar with the dead person and was also unaware of the events leading up to the discovery, the DPS said. Investigators found a purse that identified the deceased person as Salazar.

No other witnesses or physical evidence were found to help identify a suspect or locate the vehicle that hit Salazar, the DPS said. Blood evidence has been collected from the body for analysis.
