Honolulu police arrest Waikiki suspect who fled into ocean

The Honolulu Police Department officers have arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of second-degree terroristic threatening in Waikiki.

Officers responded at about noon Wednesday to a call from hotel security regarding the man, who was reported to be yelling on the beach while holding a metal stick.

“Hotel security approached the 32-year-old male regarding a possible missing room key, ” said HPD in a social media post. “During the interaction, the male threatened security personnel with the stick before fleeing into the ocean. He swam approximately 200 feet from shore.”

HPD said with help from Honolulu Ocean Safety and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, the suspect was safely escorted back to shore. Police arrested him on suspicion of terroristic threatening as well as for an outstanding warrant.
