INDOT starting final phase of construction at Stockwell Road as part of Lloyd4U project

EVANSVILLE — Traffic patterns will shift this week on the Lloyd Expressway between Boeke Road and Green River Road, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

In a news release, INDOT said on or after Tuesday, traffic will move to the new sections so work can begin on the outside sections of the Lloyd.

Two lanes in each direction will be open during the change, according to INDOT.

These changes are the final phase of construction at Stockwell Road as a part of the Lloyd4U project.

“The new displaced left turn/boulevard left turn intersection will open this summer,” INDOT stated in its news release.

While Vann Avenue and Stockwell road will still be accessible during the work, there will be no left turn for drivers heading westbound on the Lloyd to southbound Stockwell. Division Street will remain closed.

Refreshers on boulevard left and displaced lefts

Displaced left

Also known as a “continuous flow intersection.”

The displaced left turn means all left turns are made in two steps as opposed to one.

A driver will first cross from the center to the opposite side of the roadway to a secondary intersection with a traffic signal. Then the driver will go to the main traffic signal via a special roadway parallel to the mainline.

According to INDOT, the vehicles then make their left turn at the same time as through traffic because they are no longer in conflict with one another.

Boulevard left

Also known as a “Michigan Left Turn intersection.”

The boulevard left is again about making the left turn in more than one step.

Vehicles will move through the main intersection, and then complete a downstream U-turn and returning to the main intersection, where the movement finishes with a right turn.
