NEW CASTLE, Ind. — An Indianapolis man on Thursday was arrested for his role in a fatal crash that followed a police chase that began in New Castle.

Kirk Gibson, 38, is preliminarily charged with resisting law enforcement causing death, resisting law enforcement causing serious bodily injury and auto theft.

Indiana State Police said Gibson was driving a Dodge Durango on Monday night in New Castle when a Henry County sheriff’s deputy tried to pull the SUV over for reckless movement on Indiana 3,

A chase ensued, with the Durango traveling westbound on Interstate 70 through Henry and Hancock counties before reaching Indianapolis.

The Durango left the interstate at Post Road, and a short time later struck two vehicles — a Ford Mustang and a BMW — at Mitthoefer and Washington.

A passenger in the Durango — Dewuan L. Hampton, 33, of Indianapolis — was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Investigators said he had been ejected from the SUV.

While media reports indicated Hampton was believed to be the driver of the Durango, state police said Thursday they had determined the driver was Gibson.

He was arrested at his Indianapolis home by ISP detectives and member of an Indianapolis Police Department SWAT team. The Marion County prosecutor’s office will determine what formal charges might be filed.

Three occupants of the SUV and the driver of one of the other vehicles involved were taken to Indianapolis hospitals.

State police said Thursday the Durango was determined to have been stolen.
