Stargazers will be treated to the final full moon of spring, the strawberry moon, overnight Tuesday, June 10, where it’s expected to hang low in the sky.
And although all full moons in June are low in the sky, this year, it’ll be the lowest full moon in almost 20 years due to an occurrence known as the major lunar standstill.
When can you see the strawberry moon?
The full moon will peak on Wednesday, June 11, at 12:44 a.m. PT, according to USA TODAY. A moon will appear full for a couple of days, said NASA, so you do have some time to look up at the sky. And if staying up past midnight doesn’t sound appealing, rest easy knowing the moon will still look full as it rises on Tuesday evening.

The percentage of opaque clouds across most of Southern California is expected to be low by 11 p.m. However, some pockets of Southern California’s coast, including in the Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Maria, and San Luis Obispo areas, are expected to have cloudy skies then, which could obscure people’s view of the full moon, according to a forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Similarly, the skies for most of central and northern California are forecasted to have a low percentage of opaque clouds for the same time tonight. Some exceptions are along the coast, including Eureka, Fort Bragg and a pocket of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Why is it called a strawberry moon?
Some Indigenous peoples have used the strawberry moon name to “mark the ripening of ‘June-bearing’ strawberries’” ready for gathering, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. But there are other names for this moon, including the Blooming Moon, the Egg Laying Moon and the Hatching Moon, said the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

But if you’re hoping for a vibrant full moon, you may be in luck.
The June full moon’s arc across the sky means moonlight must travel through more of the Earth’s atmosphere, which can give it a colorful tint.
