Juneteenth is Thursday. Where to celebrate in Detroit

Must read

Juneteenth, a federal holiday, is Thursday, June 19, and Detroit has plans to celebrate the date marking the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S.

Juneteenth, while recently recognized by federal officials but celebrated by Black Americans across the country for decades, commemorates the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed enslaved African Americans. It was signed by President Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863.

However it was until June 19, 1865, that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas would learn of their freedom, marking the final day of slavery in the United States.
