Kasson man charged with attempted murder

Apr. 15—MANTORVILLE, Minn. — A Kasson man is facing attempted murder charges in Dodge County after trying to stab a woman and her son at a home in Kasson.

Johnathan David Harris, 52, is charged with first-degree premeditated attempted murder, first-degree attempted murder while committing domestic abuse with a past pattern of domestic abuse, two counts of second-degree assault and one count of domestic assault.

An initial appearance is scheduled for April 28.

According to the criminal complaint, law enforcement officers were dispatched to a residence in Kasson on April 11 after receiving reports that a man was trying to break in and stab the occupants inside.

When they arrived, officers found Harris pacing outside the residence with the woman who had called to report the incident. Officers instructed Harris to place his hands against the wall. He refused, took his wallet and keys out of his pocket and “postured himself in a fighting stance,” the complaint said.

Harris retreated to the passenger side of a vehicle and was pulled out by officers. When he seemingly became angrier, law enforcement brought Harris to the ground to gain control of him and handcuff him.

The woman who reported the incident told police Harris was drunk. They began arguing in the basement of the residence. Harris retrieved a knife and tried to stab her, the complaint says. She ran and got into a vehicle and was followed in by Harris.

The two were still arguing in the car when Harris placed a small black folding knife against her stomach. He began threatening to hurt the woman, the complaint says.

The woman then leaped from the driver’s seat onto the driveway, scraping her knees on the pavement.

According to the complaint, a male attempted to intervene and take the knife away while Harris and the woman were arguing. Harris raised the knife at the man and tried to stab him, but the male raised his hands defensively and was cut by the blade.

The male later told police he woke up to his mother screaming that Harris took her keys, car, wallet and phone. He said Harris attempted to stab him in the chest with a knife, but he attempted to take the knife away. At one point, he said, Harris stood over him with the knife, choked him and aimed to stab him in the neck.

Law enforcement found the described black folding knife in one of the vehicles. Officers located a blood trail and smears through the kitchen, living room, dining room, stairwell and bathroom, which were left by the male when he ran from Harris.

According to the complaint, Harris was convicted in 2016 of domestic assault and battery in Oklahoma.
