Keep waste disposal in mind amid nuclear energy comeback

Must read

I agree wholeheartedly with Rep. Tom Mehaffie’s May 3 commentary (“Bring nuclear jobs back to Pennsylvania”). There can be no doubt that increased nuclear power will create jobs and all the benefits that entails.

But there’s no such thing as a free lunch, and every coin has two sides.

I’m referring to nuclear waste. According to www.world-nuclear.org, around 3% of nuclear waste “is long-lived and highly radioactive and requires isolation from the environment for many thousands of years.”

Per www.nucnet.org, the U.S. has accumulated about 83,000 tons of nuclear waste since nuclear reactors started in the 1950s.Let’s do the nuclear thing carefully with a long-term vision in place.
