Knife-wielding man shot by police at scene of New Jersey double homicide

Must read

Police in New Jersey shot a man they said was wielding a knife at the scene of a double homicide in Hillsborough Township, prosecutors announced Friday.

The officer-involved shooting occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m. Thursday as Hillsborough Township Police responded to a house on Cornell Trail after receiving a request to conduct a welfare check.

After they entered the residence to perform the check, a man “emerged from a second-floor bedroom holding a knife” and was “shot as he advanced toward the officers,” according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

Police immediately began performing life-saving measures on the suspect, who remained hospitalized in critical condition Friday.

Following the shooting, officers searching the home discovered the bodies of two adults, a male and a female, in separate bedrooms on the second floor. They were both pronounced dead at the scene, though it’s unclear how they died.

Prosecutors said they would not at this time be releasing the identities of the suspect, the victims or the officers involved in the shooting. They did not say whether the man shot by police was a suspect in the double homicide.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Hillsborough Township is located roughly 50 miles southwest of Lower Manhattan near the Sourland Mountain Preserve.
