Kohl’s Corp. plans to permanently close its e-commerce fulfillment center in Monroe, displacing more than 700 workers, according to a mass layoff notice filed with the state of Ohio.
The facility at 3500 Salzman Road is located inside the Monroe city limits but is close to U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance’s hometown of Middletown and has a Middletown mailing address, according to Monroe city officials, who declined further comment.
Kohl’s said it would shut down the facility by Oct. 31, affecting all 768 employees listed on the notice filed with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
The employees last day is scheduled for Sept. 12, however, it’s possible that handful of employees will be allowed to stay on longer to assist with administrative tasks related to the closure, the notice states.
All employees have been notified of their separation date and that their layoffs will be permanent.
The employees are not represented by a union.
Kohl’s, headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, shut down 27 underperforming locations in 15 states in March as the struggling department store chain tried to boost profitability and improve sagging sales.
The chain posted a sales decline of 4.1% for the first quarter this year, continuing a streak in which it has posted quarterly sales declines for more than two years.
