Rain is likely to be an unwelcome guest at Labor Day events this weekend in Daytona Beach, Volusia and Flagler counties, according to the National Weather Service.
In Daytona Beach, greater coverage of rain and lightning storms is expected into the holiday weekend, bringing the potential for localized flooding, gusty winds and frequent lightning strikes, according to a forecast discussion by the National Weather Service in Melbourne.
“It looks like we’re in a wet pattern into at least the early to middle part of next week,” said Matt Volkmer, a meteorologist with the NWS. “There’s a low pressure system over the east coast that causing deep moisture over Florida that will linger into next week.”
The forecast calls for storms developing each afternoon through the holiday weekend, Volkmer said.
“The main concerns are the possibility of locally heavy rainfall of 2-3 inches in spots through the holiday weekend, even into early next week,” he said. “We’re looking at rain chances around 80% over the weekend.”
