SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — After years of debate, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints officially broke ground on its new temple on Thursday in Las Vegas.
The new temple, named the Lone Mountain Nevada Temple, was announced during the October 2022 General Conference by President Russell M. Nelson. The temple will be the fourth in the state of Nevada, with the Las Vegas Nevada Temple, which was dedicated in 1989, the Reno Nevada Temple, which was dedicated in 2000, and the Elko Nevada Temple, which is set to be dedicated on October 12.
There was plenty of debate around the building from its announcement up to its groundbreaking, despite passing a unanimous vote from the Las Vegas city council in July 2024. Some of the issues were regarding the height and lighting of the building, and how it would impact the local neighborhood.
The plans for the temple call for it to be a three-story temple on nearly 20 acres of land located southwest of Hickman Avenue, between North Grand Canyon drive and Tee Pee Lane in Las Vegas.
Elder Michael A. Dunn, First Counselor in the United States Southwest Area Presidency, presided at the groundbreaking. In his dedicatory prayer, he asked for blessings of the workers who will soon begin constructing the temple.
“Guide the hands that will shape stone, wood, glass and steel, that the beauty and craftsmanship of this temple may reflect the divinge truths that will be taught within its walls,” Dunn said.
