A live grenade was found in a residential backyard in Norwalk on Monday — one of two incidents in the same day involving a grenade that prompted a response from an area bomb squad.
Both incidents — reported hours apart from one another — led to police securing residential areas while the Stamford Police Department Bomb Squad responded to investigate, according to Lt. Tomasz Podgorski of the Norwalk Police Department.
The first incident was reported at 10:21 a.m. at a home on St. Mary’s Lane where a resident reported discovering a grenade on the side of the road, Podgorski said. The grenade was found to be disabled and inert.
At 3:30 p.m., police received another report of a grenade being found, this time in the backyard of a home on Wolfpit Avenue. The grenade was found to be live and was safely removed by the bomb squad, according to Podgorski.
Podgorski said the Norwalk explosive detection dog and his handler conducted a sweep of the surrounding area and did not find any more suspicious devices. According to Google Maps, Wolfpit Avenue is about two miles away from St. Mary’s Lane.
Podgorski referred to the incidents as “suspicious” but did not give any indication whether police believe they are related.
