A typically bustling block of busy Midtown Palm Beach was closed to vehicle traffic on the afternoon of May 1 ahead of an expected visit from Vice President JD Vance.
The 200 block of Worth Avenue was expected to be closed from 4 to 8 p.m. for the event, which two news outlets reported was a $1 million-per-person fundraiser headlined by Vance for the Make America Great Again Inc. PAC in support of President Donald Trump.
Law enforcement agencies set up tents in the Apollo Lot on the southeast corner of Peruvian and Hibiscus avenues before 4 p.m., and a K-9 sniffed each vehicle that entered the lot. Agencies on site included the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Secret Service.
It’s unclear where in the 200 block of Worth Avenue the event is being held.
A handful of residents and visitors who tried to access Le Bilboquet restaurant, which is in the 200 block of Worth, were turned away when they tried to go there for dinner after 4 p.m.
There will be security checkpoints in the 200 block of Peruvian Avenue for local vehicle traffic, which Police spokesman Capt. Will Rothrock said may involve “brief screenings” depending on where motorists plan to travel.
Those who parked on Worth Avenue or in the Apollo Lot prior to the closure will be allowed to leave during the four-hour period, he said.
Law enforcement officers search a vehicle entering the Apollo Lot parking area ahead of a visit from Vice President JD Vance in Palm Beach on May 1, 2025.
Pedestrian movement will not be limited during that time, Rothrock said.
