Man, 44, arrested after allegedly biting HPD officer in Waikiki

A 44-year-old man was arrested in Waikiki this morning after he allegedly bit open an officer’s forearm following a foot chase.

At about 10 :23 a.m., District 6 patrol officers responded to Ena Road based on a complaint from a 44-year-old man.

Officers recognized him as a “wanted suspect in connection with several unrelated crimes ” and confirmed his identity, according to a statement from police.

“When officers informed the man that he was under arrest, he attempted to flee. During the apprehension, officers used force to detain him, and the suspect bit an officer on the forearm, causing an open laceration, ” HPD sad.

The injured officer drove himself to the hospital where he was treated and listed in good condition, police said. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and eight counts of misuse of 911.

He was treated at the scene for exposure to oleoresin capsicum spray, commonly referred to as pepper spray, a non-lethal option used to help detain suspects.

Charges will be sought with the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney, police said.
