Man accused in 2022 homicide gets life in prison after shooting at police vehicle

FORT PIERCE − A 20-year-old man was sentenced April 16 to life in prison after shooting several times at Fort Pierce police detectives’ unmarked vehicle in 2022, police stated.

The sentencing of Zeggeree Adonnus White came after a jury in February convicted him on two counts each related to attempted first-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder and single counts each of discharging a firearm from a vehicle and possession of a firearm after being found delinquent, records show.

The sentencing was in Circuit Judge Lawrence Mirman’s courtroom, records show.

The charges stemmed from a February 2022 incident in which White was accused of firing several shots at an unmarked Fort Pierce Police vehicle, records show. He was 17 at the time.

Police said investigators were conducting a close patrol in the 900 block of North 32nd Street when they encountered a group of people “behind a building in an area known for recent gun violence,” a news release states.

White was one of them. They got in a Hyundai and tried to flee. White, in the back in the vehicle, opened the door “and fired five to six rounds directly at the detectives’ vehicle,” the news release states.

Meanwhile, White in February was arrested along with Lonnie Bee Smalls III, 21, each on a first-degree murder charge after St. Lucie County Sheriff’s investigators reported linking them to the November 2022 fatal shooting of 23-year-old Vincent Rashawn Green Jr. in the area of Hilton Drive.

Smalls was arrested in relation to the Green slaying while in the Martin County Jail where he is held in connection with another 2022 homicide, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

Smalls faces a host of charges in connection with the Nov. 24, 2022 – Thanksgiving Day − fatal shooting of 74-year-old Mattie Jones in East Stuart.

Jones was inside her home at Southeast Spruce Avenue and Southeast 10th Street when the shooting occurred. A couple in a vehicle outside also got struck by gunfire.

Stuart police have said Jones was not the intended target. An agency spokesperson at the time said she was “an innocent person sitting in her living room.”
