The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man who fled the scene of a fatal crash in Riverview early Friday.

Just before 5 a.m., a 911 caller reported a traffic crash near Providence Road and Bloomingdale Avenue, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

When deputies arrived, they found a dead 19-year-old female driver. She has not yet been identified.

Witnesses told deputies that the woman was driving on Providence Road when she was hit by another vehicle that ran a red light on Bloomingdale Avenue. The driver of that vehicle then fled on foot, deputies said.

Detectives found Roberto Carlos Meza Rosales, 21, hours after the crash. He admitted to fleeing the scene and showed signs of impairment, deputies said.

Meza Rosales is a Honduran national living in Hillsborough County who entered the U.S. illegally in 2018, according to the sheriff’s office.

The agency is “coordinating with U.S. Customs and Border Protection regarding his immigration status,” the news release states.

Meza Rosales was jailed on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death. Records show he was being held at the Falkenburg Road Jail on a $200,000 bond.

The investigation is ongoing, and no further details were immediately released.
