A Laurel County man was arrested Sunday, June 22, after Kentucky State Police Post 11 discovered homemade explosives during an incident on KY 490.
According to KSP, a trooper encountered a potentially explosive situation and requested assistance from the agency’s Hazardous Devices Unit (HDU). The unit, along with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), responded to the scene.
Trooper Scottie Pennington reported observing an item burning in the roadway when he was approached by a man later identified as William R. Jones, 36, of East Bernstadt. Jones informed the trooper that the burning material belonged to him and contained a mixture of potassium nitrate and sugar — substances commonly associated with homemade fireworks.
Jones also stated that additional explosive materials and precursors were located at his residence and consented to a voluntary search of his property.
HDU and ATF agents conducted the search, which led to the discovery of more explosive substances and related components. All materials were safely collected and disposed of by the HDU.
Jones was taken into custody following the incident and charged with first-degree wanton endangerment.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being led by Trooper D. Pennington, with support from KSP personnel, HDU, and ATF.
A not guilty plea was entered on Jones’ behalf at arraignment June 23.
