Man arrested after setting SJ County officer on fire has lengthy rap sheet

Jul. 12—STOCKTON — A San Joaquin County probation officer is recovering from non-life threatening burns this week after he was set on fire by a parolee.

The probation department said that a 39-year-old man currently on parole entered the office, located at 575 W. Mathews Road in French Camp, at about 2:10 p.m. on July 10 with a gas can and lighter in his hands

A security guard activated an emergency alert prompting officers to respond to the area. While attempting to detain the man, officers were led to a nearby parking lot where a struggle ensued and the suspect was able to set fire to a probation officer, reports state.

Probation officers on scene were able to extinguish the flames and detain the individual in handcuffs.

The Stockton Police Department was contacted and took the the man into custody without further incident.

The probation officer was transported to an area hospital for treatment of significant but non-life-threatening burns, but due to the extent of his injuries, he was eventually taken to UC Davis medical center. The suspect, whose name was not released, was also transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

According to San Joaquin County Jail inmate records, Adam Bud Lopez was booked at 11:29 p.m. Thursday on suspicion of attempted murder and arson causing great bodily injury.

He is being held without bail and is expected to appear in court on Monday, July 14 at 1:30 p.m.

Lopez has a ling history of run-ins with local law enforcement, according to San Joaquin County Superior Court records.

His last offense was in 2022 when he was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and ammunition, for petty theft in 2021, and for vehicle theft and hit and run in 2017.

He was arrested for burglary twice in 2013, and twice in 2012, once for grand theft and once for possession of a controlled substance.

His first arrest in the county was in 2004, on suspicion of vehicle theft, burglary, obstruction and possession of a stolen vehicle, according to court records.
