A Mount Upton man has been convicted of attempting to kill another person by hitting him with a car.

According to a news release from the Otsego County District Attorney’s Office, Skylar A. Clement, 21, was convicted in Otsego County Court on Thursday, Aug. 21 of second-degree attempted murder, a Class B violent felony, and first-degree assault, a Class B violent felony. After a four-day trial, the jury deliberated for two hours and 20 minutes before finding Clement guilty on both counts of the indictment.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Christopher J. Di Donna prosecuted the case. According to the release, Clement intentionally struck an individual, with whom he attended high school, with his 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt at a speed of 40 mph while that individual stood in his mother’s driveway in the town of Butternuts. Clement then allegedly fled the scene. The incident took place on July 21, 2024, according to Daily Star archives.

The evidence showed the victim sustained serious physical injury; specifically, multiple fractures to his left leg, requiring surgery and necessitating the use of a wheelchair and a walker for months thereafter, the release stated.

The jury received nearly 60 exhibits into evidence, including two Snapchat videos made by Clement — one in which he threatened to kill the person minutes before hitting him with his car, and the other in which he brags about hitting and killing that person with his car afterward.

Sentencing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 20. Clement is facing a maximum sentence of 25 years in state prison, according to the release.

Clement was represented by lawyer George F. Hildebrant, of Syracuse. Judge John F. Lambert presided over the trial.
