A man died after being shot during a custody dispute in Florence on July 25, according to police.

Florence police said in a news release that officers responded to 130 Lloyd Ave. at approximately 10:30 p.m. for a report of a male subject suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Officers administered emergency care until EMS arrived, which then took the man to St. Elizabeth-Florence Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Officials have not released his identity.

Preliminary investigation of the incident revealed that the man and the suspect were involved in a verbal argument related to custody issues, police said. The argument escalated and the suspect produced a handgun, firing one round that struck the victim.

One subject, which police have not identified either, was detained at the scene, and police said more information will be forthcoming.

Police added the investigation suggests this was an isolated incident and there is no active threat to the community at this time.
