Jun. 13—ROWLESBURG — The West Virginia Natural Resources Police are investigating a Thursday evening black bear attack that left a man hospitalized.
The victim suffered lacerations and a bite wound in the incident near Rowlesburg. He was transported by helicopter to Morgantown and underwent surgery for his injuries at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Capt. David James said.
The West Virginia State Police, Preston County Sheriff’s Department and the Natural Resources Police responded to the scene.
“This is an ongoing investigation, ” James said. “Our wildlife resources personnel are working to determine whether the attack was provoked or unprovoked.”
At this time, officials have not released information on whether the bear had been located or euthanized. The name of the victim and specific location of the incident have not been released.
