A 46-year-old man was ordered held without bail on Tuesday after prosecutors said he tried to kill four people — his significant other, her 18-year-old daughter, another teen girl and a toddler — at a Mattapan home on Monday night.
It was just two days after he committed another domestic violence incident against his family, according to court records.
Calvin Stokes, 46, was wearing a white hood to hide his face when he appeared in Dorchester District Court on Tuesday morning for his arraignment, which was removed by the court officers. Stokes faced charges stemming from separate incidents on Saturday and Monday.
The charges from Saturday included assault and battery on a family or household member, along with multiple traffic lane violations like failure to stop for police and speeding.
For the suspected attempted killings on Monday night, Stokes faced three counts of armed assault to murder with a firearm, one charge of assault to kill and one charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
He was also charged with firearm violations as a career criminal, unlawful possession of a firearm and of ammunition and firing a gun within 500 feet of a building.
What happened?
In the courtroom on Tuesday, prosecutors laid out a timeline of events from the two incidents on Saturday and Monday.
Stokes was first stopped by police on Saturday night, prosecutors said, after he was seen driving erratically and crossing over the double yellow lines.
He was finally pulled over at 33 Regis Rd. in Mattapan, prosecutors said. A 47-year-old woman with whom Stokes is in a romantic relationship with came out of the house and said she had just been assaulted by Stokes, prosecutors said. Police at the scene also noted a visible injury to her ear.
Prosecutors did not disclose why Stokes was not taken into police custody on Saturday night.
Then, at around 11:15 p.m. on Monday, police received a call that a person had been shot at 33 Regis Rd.
The 47-year-old woman — Stokes’ significant other — was found with multiple gunshot wounds on her torso inside the home, according to a police report.
A 16-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy were also found shot, Boston Police said. The children had several gunshot wounds on their arms and legs, prosecutors said.
According to the police report, the gunfire had broken out on the first floor of the home. This prompted an 18-year-old woman — who is the daughter of Stokes’ significant other, the report said — to come downstairs.
The 18-year-old saw Stokes “holding a firearm and pointing it at her and her sisters,” according to the report.
“… A struggle then ensued and [Stokes] pushed [the 18-year-old] hard, causing injuries to [the] chin,” the report read.
Stokes then went to the kitchen, grabbed a knife and tried to stab his 47-year-old significant other in the stomach, but the 18-year-old defended her mom, according to the report. The 18-year-old was stabbed in the left hand during the process.
Stokes fled the scene in a gray Dodge Durango, then returned hours later as police were conducting their investigation at the home, according to the report.
Stokes “slowly pulled up” to the crime scene, rolled down his window and asked a police officer, “‘Hey, what happened? This is my house.’”
When the officer asked his name, Stokes immediately drove off, according to the report. The officer radioed in the direction Stokes was headed and other officers were able to pull Stokes over and arrest him.
In the courtroom on Tuesday, Stokes shook his head when prosecutors said there were “juveniles” who had been hurt in the shooting and stabbing.
At one point, when his defense attorney was discussing his occupation, Stokes called out, “I got my timecard,” but did not speak otherwise at his arraignment.
Stokes was ordered held pending a dangerousness hearing on Monday, April 28.
