Maui police said a motorcyclist has died from her injuries after colliding with a car in Kahului Sunday evening.

Police identified her as Riana Lee, 33, of Makawao.

Police said the crash occurred at about 5 :20 p.m. at the intersection of Wahinepio Avenue and Keopuolani Parkway in Kahului.

Based on a preliminary investigation, a 36-year-old woman driving a 2023 Kia Soul was turning east onto Wahinepio Avenue, out of Keopuolani Park. At the same time, Lee was heading west on a 2023 Yamaha YZF-R3 motorcycle and collided with the car’s front bumper.

Lee was ejected from the motorcycle and suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision.

She was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, where she later died. Police said she was not wearing a helmet.

The woman driving the Kia and her passenger, a 59-year-old woman, both sustained minor injuries even though their airbags did not deploy. They were treated at the scene and released.

“The involvement of speed, alcohol, or drugs has not been determined as the investigation is still ongoing, ” said MPD.

Police said this was Maui County’s 13th traffic fatality this year, compared to eight at the same time last year. Hawaii’s statewide traffic fatality count is at 71 so far this year, compared to 48 at the same time last year, according to the state Department of Transportation.
