NORTHERN MICHIGAN — The Michigan Department of Transportation will be cleaning bascule bridges in three Northern Michigan communities in May.
Charlevoix’s iconic bascule bridge will be under construction starting on Oct. 30 through May 2024.
According to MDOT, the cleanings will remove sand and salt from the bridge decks to prevent corrosion.
The scheduled cleanings are as follows:
May 19-20: The U.S. 31 bascule bridge over the Manistee River in Manistee
May 21: The U.S. 31 bascule bridge over the Pine River Channel in Charlevoix
May 22: The U.S. 23 bascule bridge over the Cheboygan River in Cheboygan
On the scheduled dates, the bridges will have single-lane closures with traffic shifts. One lane will remain open in each direction at all times.
