On the heels of a recall that hit 150,000 pounds of shrimp sold at Kroger supermarkets, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced another recall of Kroger-brand shrimp over fears it is contaminated with radioactive material.
The recalls, which include yet another at Walmart, are part of an active FDA investigation into reports of Cesium-137 (Cs-137) contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (doing business as BMS Foods) of Indonesia.
So, check your freezers. Here’s the latest batch of shrimp to be recalled.

The FDA is working with distributors and retailers that received products from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati after Cs-137 was first detected to issue recalls. In conjunction with other information, the FDA determined that products from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati violate the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act in that it appears to have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with Cs-137 and may pose a safety concern.

What is Cesium-137 (Cs-137)? It can cause burns, cancer
Cs-137 is a radioisotope of cesium, meaning it is a chemical element that emits radiation as it breaks down. It is man-made and is produced by nuclear fission, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In the United States, it is used in medical devices and measurement gauges, such as industrial devices that measure the thickness of materials.
Because it is widespread around the globe, trace amounts can be found in the environment, including soil, food and air, the FDA said. Agencies, including the FDA and U.S. Customs & Border Protection, test for, monitor and regulate Cs-137’s presence due to the risks associated with long-term exposure.
The FDA said low-level radiation exposure over time can lead to serious health complications. Exposure to Cs-137 alone can cause burns, acute radiation sickness, cancer and death. As a result, the governing agencies restrict potential exposure to lessen the possibility of these long-term impacts.

Consumers who have purchased affected shrimp should not consume the product. Instead, the FDA advises that they should dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
