Mount Vernon auxiliary cop under investigation over punching of teen in video

Must read

A Mount Vernon auxiliary police officer has been suspended from the volunteer position while police investigate a video that allegedly showed him hitting a teenager over the weekend, the department said in a statement.

The police statement on Wednesday, Sept. 25, said the auxiliary officer was also a civilian employee of the department, but did not identify him or his department job.

The video appeared on TikTok and was posted on Facebook by Mount Vernon NewsCenter. It shows a person allegedly identified as the uniformed auxiliary officer and the teenager in a group of people on West Prospect Avenue at the side of McDonalds on Saturday, Sept. 20.

The officer appears to throw two punches as the teen stood against the restaurant window and then the officer walked into the street. He returned seconds later and appeared to punch the teen again three times in the left arm.

Details about what the confrontation was about have not been provided.

Police Chief Marcel Olifiers, who was named acting police commissioner this week, could not immediately be reached for comment.

A city spokesman said Thursday there was no change to the auxiliary officer’s job status in the civilian police position.
