National Night Out coming to Manitowoc Public Library Aug. 5, plus more library events

MANITOWOC – Here’s what’s happening at the Manitowoc Public Library, 707 Quay St., this week. For more information, call 920-686-3000 or visit manitowoclibrary.org.

  • Summer Reading Program — Runs through Aug. 9. Read or be read to a total of 30 days to complete the program. Every six days read earns you a prize. Participants have until Aug. 16 to pick up prizes, while supplies last. Register on the Beanstack app or pick up a paper tracker at the library. More details: www.manitowoclibrary.org/srp.

  • Baby Storytime — 9:30 a.m. July 31, and Aug. 6 and 7. Recommended for developmental ages 0-2 and siblings welcome.

  • Preschool Storytime — 10:30 a.m. July 31, Aug. 6 and 7. Recommended for developmental ages 2-5 and siblings welcome.

  • Storytime on the Road at Rahr-West Art Museum — 10 a.m. Aug. 1 on the lawn at the Rahr-West Art Museum, 610 N. Eighth St. For families with preschoolers. Take chairs or blankets. If weather is bad, the program will be inside the museum.

  • Teen Hang-Out: Wild Side Selfies! — 1-2 p.m. Aug. 1 in the Balkansky Community Room. Have a wild selfie session with a choice of backdrops, a lighting rig and the reptilian co-star of your choice.

  • Department of Workforce Development employment assistance — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays in the Franklin Street Room. Résumé writing, assistance with online applications, assistance registering in Job Center of Wisconsin and more. No appointment needed.

  • National Night Out — 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 5. Join the library and Manitowoc Police Department for this annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships. Activities include learning about crime prevention and family safety; making a child ID kit; meeting a police officer; seeing police and fire vehicles; watching a K-9 demonstration; watching a drone demonstration; and visiting with local 4-H members and meeting their project animals.

  • Shipwreck Detectives with Wisconsin Maritime Museum — 2-3 p.m. Aug. 6 in the Balkansky Community Room. Uncover the secrets of Lake Michigan’s shipwrecks through engaging hands-on activities.

  • Drop-In Chess Club — 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 6 in the Balkansky Community Room. All abilities and ages 6 years and older are welcome. Chessboards and materials for further learning are provided, although no formal instruction is offered.

  • Early closure — The library will close at 5 p.m. Aug. 7 so staff can attend the city’s employee picnic. Regular hours will resume at 9 a.m. Aug. 8.
