Neptune Festival cancels Grand Parade ahead of severe weather threat

Organizers of Neptune Festival announced Saturday morning the cancellation of the weekend-spanning event’s signature Grand Parade under threat of severe weather.

All other scheduled events at the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, however, are to proceed as scheduled. Organizers said in the event harsh weather affects those other events, programming will be paused until conditions improve.

This year’s is the 51st Annual Neptune Festival. The event’s mission centers on celebrating “the spirit of Virginia Beach” while generating millions of dollars for the local economy, organizers said.

Forecasters expect the region will have received up to 3 inches of rain by the end of the weekend. There’s a marginal possibility of flash floods. Disturbances in the tropics and the Atlantic may create rip currents felt by the region. Forecasters expect a system to form into Tropical Storm Imelda later this weekend off Florida’s Atlantic coast. Meanwhile, Hurricane Humberto deeper in the Atlantic has become a Category 4 storm.
