New Mexico Piñon Coffee recalls coffee pods due to manufacturing issues

Jul. 18—New Mexico Piñon Coffee has voluntarily recalled 154 units of single-serve pods due to manufacturing issues.

The clear sealant on impacted Dark Piñon single-serve cups, compatible with Keurig coffeemakers, was not consistently applied in production, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration notice. Affected units came in 10-packs labeled with a May 8, 2026, best by date and lot code 251749.

The manufacturing error resulted in the packaging’s food-safe ink bleeding when exposed to high temperatures and water pressure during the brewing process.

Piñon Coffee declined to comment on where impacted units were sold, but according to its website, consumers can find products at “almost every grocery store throughout New Mexico.” Known retailers include Walmart, Costco, Smith’s and Target.

The FDA labeled it a Class III recall, in which use of or exposure to the impacted product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences. Piñon Coffee, based in Albuquerque, has not reported any illness or injury as of now.

“While the issue was isolated and poses no health risk, it didn’t meet the standard of excellence you’ve come to expect from us,” Piñon Coffee President Matthew Bregar said in a statement to the Journal. “We’ve already addressed the issue and taken steps to refine our process moving forward.”
