Quiet trails, misty overlooks, and the rush of falling water — when you arrive at Letchworth, it’s not the size that hits you first. It’s the feeling. This isn’t Arizona’s vast expanse; it’s something more intimate. More lush. And more surprising than you’d expect from a state park tucked away in western New York.
A Canyon That Surprises
Aerial majesty over Genesee River Gorge — autumn’s fiery tapestry drapes the cliffs and carves out one of New York’s most breathtaking vistas.
We’ve stood at the edge of the Grand Canyon in Arizona — and yes, it’s massive. But when we arrived at Letchworth State Park, often called the “Grand Canyon of the East,” we were genuinely impressed. The Genesee River has carved a gorge nearly 600 feet deep, flanked by vertical cliffs and peaceful forests that beg to be explored.
It’s not about matching the scale of the Southwest. It’s about discovering a place that feels wild, serene, and unexpectedly grand — all within reach of the Finger Lakes.
Waterfalls That Steal the Show
Middle Falls in full roar — the towering cascade dwarfs onlookers at the edge, revealing nature’s raw power and breathtaking scale.
Letchworth features dozens of waterfalls, but three in particular make hiking the gorge unforgettable: Upper Falls, Middle Falls, and Lower Falls. Each one is a showstopper, with Middle Falls towering at 107 feet and delivering a misty roar that left us speechless.
We also loved Wolf Creek Falls, a series of four cascades plunging 225 feet into the gorge. And if you’re lucky enough to visit after heavy rain or snowmelt, you might catch Inspiration Falls, a seasonal 350-foot drop that lives up to its name.

A Bridge You Won’t Forget
Sunset drapes Upper Falls in golden glow — the arch bridge stands in silhouette, framing the fiery descent of day over one of Letchworth’s most iconic views.
One image that remains etched in our minds: the Genesee Arch Bridge spanning the gorge, with waterfalls tumbling below and forested cliffs rising on either side. It’s a scene that feels cinematic — and it’s just a short walk from the main visitor area near Castile.
Whether you’re hiking the Gorge Trail or simply stopping at overlooks, this view alone makes the trip worthwhile.
Lunch with a View
After soaking in the scenery, we headed to the Glen Iris Inn, a charming and historic spot overlooking Middle Falls. The grounds are peaceful, the view is spectacular, and the food? Surprisingly memorable.
Julie and I split a club sandwich — fresh, crisp, and satisfying. But the real star was dessert. Julie’s a bread pudding fanatic, and Glen Iris Inn’s cranberry almond bread pudding with vanilla sauce earned the #2 spot on her all-time list. The flavors blend beautifully, and the setting makes it even better.
If you’re planning a visit, we highly recommend timing your hike around lunch at the inn. It’s the perfect way to relax and reflect on the morning’s adventure.

Unique Experiences You Won’t Want to Miss
Kissing the mist — as the hot air balloon dips near the cascade, nature and flight converge in a breathtaking moment of silent wonder.
If you’re looking to elevate your visit — literally — consider a hot air balloon ride over the gorge. Offered year-round by Balloons Over Letchworth, these sunrise and sunset flights deliver magical views of the cliffs, waterfalls, and forests below. It’s one of the most unforgettable ways to experience the park’s grandeur.
Letchworth also offers something truly special for families and visitors of all abilities: the Autism Nature Trail (The ANT). This thoughtfully designed 1-mile loop features eight interactive stations that range from quiet reflection to active exploration. It’s a welcoming space for those on the autism spectrum and a meaningful addition to the park’s commitment to accessibility. You can learn more at The Autism Nature Trail’s official site.
Why Letchworth Leaves a Lasting Impression
A passage through permanence — the arch bridge frames not just the falls, but the sense that some places never stop resonating long after you’ve walked away.
Whether you’re hiking past roaring waterfalls, soaring above the gorge in a hot air balloon, or sharing dessert at a quaint inn overlooking Middle Falls, Letchworth State Park offers more than just scenery — it delivers connection, surprise, and a sense of quiet grandeur.
It’s not the deepest canyon, but it might be one of the most heartfelt. With inclusive trails like the Autism Nature Trail, unforgettable vistas, and moments that linger long after your visit, Letchworth proves that big beauty doesn’t always require big hype.
