Iona is expected to turn into a major hurricane on Tuesday, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
Iona was located about 810 miles south-southeast of Honolulu, packing maximum sustained winds of 85 mph.
At 5 p.m., Iona moving toward west near 13 mph and expected to continue over the next couple days to gradually increase in forward speed.
“Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph (140 km /h ) with higher gusts. Rapid strengthening is forecast tonight with Iona expected to become a major hurricane on Tuesday. Steady weakening is expected to begin by Wednesday, ” according to the forecast.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles.

Tropical Storm Keli has shown little change in strength as it is located 1, 030 miles southeast of Honolulu, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
Keli was moving toward the west near 12 mph and expected to move in the general westward motion over the next few days.
Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts.
“Some strengthening is possible during the next day or so, however, weakening should begin around the middle of the week, ” forecasters said.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center.
There are no coastal warnings or watches in effect.

Tropical Depression Two-C has become Tropical Storm Keli, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
Keli was located about 1, 090 miles southeast of Honolulu, packing maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.
At 11 a.m. today, Keli was moving toward the west near 10 mph and expected to move in a general westward motion over the next few days.
Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is possible during the next day or so, but is expected to weaken around the middle of next week.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Iona was expected to strengthen as it moves westward.
Iona was located about 870 miles south-southeast of Honolulu with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. Iona was moving toward the west near 10 mph and expected to increase in forward speed over the next couple of days.
Iona’s maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph with higher gusts and expected to strengthen in the next day or two then gradually weaken around midweek.
“Confidence remains high that Iona will stay well south of the Hawaiian Islands, ” forecasters report.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center.
There are no other coastal watches or warnings in effect.
EARLIER COVERAGE Iona, the first named storm of the Central Pacific season, quickly intensified overnight into a Category 1 hurricane far southeast of the Hawaiian Islands, while a new tropical depression also formed in the basin.
At 5 a.m. today, Iona was located about 900 miles southeast of Honolulu, packing maximum sustained winds of 75 mph with higher gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Iona was moving west near 10 mph, and forecasters expect that track to continue with a gradual increase in speed over the next couple of days. Additional strengthening is forecast today and Tuesday before gradual weakening begins midweek.

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Two-C formed early today and was located about 1, 140 miles east-southeast of Honolulu at 5 a.m. with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. The system is moving west near 13 mph and is forecast to strengthen briefly before weakening later this week.
Neither system currently poses a threat to the state, but forecasters are monitoring their progress closely.
Light to moderate trade winds are expected to hold through today as a low-level trough drifts westward through the islands, bringing humid conditions and increased showers over the central and western islands, according to the National Weather Service. Trades are forecast to strengthen and drier weather is expected statewide starting Tuesday.
