A nonfatal shooting near a high school soccer game forced players and fans to shelter in place at Central High School Aug. 26, Jefferson County Public Schools officials said.
According to a news release, Louisville Metro Police responded to a report of a shooting near the 1500 block of Congress Street around 8:10 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a man who had been shot once in the knee, spokesperson Aaron Ellis said. The man was taken to UofL Hospital.
At the same time, J. Graham Brown School and duPont Manual High School were playing a soccer match at Central High School. Attendees had to shelter in place, but no one was injured, officials said.
In a letter to parents, administrators at Brown and Manual said the shooting was at a nearby store and unrelated to the game or JCPS schools.
“However, it is another heartbreaking example of how community violence continues to impact our students and school events. This is unacceptable,” Principals Michael Newman from Manual and Angela Parsons from Brown wrote letters sent to families.
After LMPD confirmed the area was secure, attendees were allowed to leave, administrators said.
“We have a few juveniles detained that we believe might have fled from the shooting,” Ellis said.
Ellis said LMPD’s Nonfatal Shooting Unit will continue to lead the investigation, but no arrests have been made.
