Norwich, Montville and Sprague projects get boost from state

Must read

The State Bond Commission is expected to approve $2.2 million for projects in Norwich, Sprague and Montville, according to a community announcement from State Sen. Cathy Osten, D-Sprague.

The funding is a partial reallocation of bond funds originally earmarked for the Sheltering Arms Residential Care home in Norwich. Changes in the scope of the renovation reduced costs, freeing up funds for other projects.

The reallocated bond funds will cover several projects:

  • $200,000 for pavilion renovations and recreational field upgrades in Montville

  • $185,000 for upgrades to recreational facilities at the American Legion Post 85 in Baltic

  • $175,000 for upgrades and paving of the Montville pickleball court parking lot

  • $155,000 for kitchen renovations at the Taftville Fire Department

  • $100,000 for renovations and upgrades at the Taftville VFW

  • $30,000 for roof repairs at St. Joseph’s School in Sprague

Norwich Mayor Peter Nystrom, left, and state Sen. Cathy Osten, right, read proclamations commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Sheltering Arms building. Between them is UCFS' VP of Business Administration Pam Kinder and CEO Jennifer Granger.

The commission is also expected to approve $1.4 million for the Avalonia Land Conservancy to purchase the Bond Property in Montville and Salem. The 673-acre property connects wild spaces and features forested woodlands, rivers and ponds. It helps protect clean drinking water for more than 45,000 people and provides a habitat for countless species.

“There are a lot of bonding needs all across eastern Connecticut that deserve to be funded, and the ones on this agenda will all improve the quality of life for seniors, veterans, firefighters, students and others,” Osten said in the announcement. “I want to thank Senate President Martin Looney and Gov. Lamont for getting these projects on this bond agenda and for showing the people of eastern Connecticut that Hartford can invest in people and places all over the state.”

The commission is set to meet at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 1 in Room 1-E of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
