If you’re looking to spend a day at the coast and contribute to helping countless children, consider hitting the annual Duffle Bag Bash from 12 to 3 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Matunuck Community Association in South Kingstown.
Now in its 10th year, the bash is sponsored by Adoption Rhode Island, the Office of the Child Advocate and Lise M. Iwon and benefits children in foster care.
The event will feature live music, food, games, crafts, touch-a-truck, therapy animals and more. The rain date is set for Aug. 11.
No child should have to move with a trash bag
The bash got its roots from the reality that children in foster and residential care often move from placement to placement throughout their lives, carrying their belongings with them in trash bags.
The Duffle Bag Bash helps make those moves a little less difficult: The admission “fee” for adults is a new duffle bag or rolling suitcase or a $25 gift card. For children, admission is a new backpack.
By providing children and teens with their own duffle bag or suitcase, it ensures they have safe and dignified place to keep their personal items, organizers said.
