A fatal shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan turned deadly Monday evening, leaving an NYPD officer dead and multiple civilians injured. The incident unfolded inside a high-rise that houses major firms including Blackstone, NFL headquarters, and KPMG, according to officials.
Police say the gunman, later identified as Shane Tamura, 27, entered the building wearing a bullet-resistant vest and carrying an AR-style rifle. He opened fire just after 6:30 p.m., setting off alarms and prompting a massive law enforcement response in one of Manhattan’s busiest commercial corridors.

Chaos inside a landmark office tower
Eyewitnesses described panic as workers and visitors scrambled for cover. Some floors were evacuated, while others were ordered to shelter in place.
Security footage captured Tamura moving quickly through the lobby before heading to the building’s upper floors. Emergency calls were placed almost immediately, and officers were on the scene within minutes.
An off-duty NYPD officer, working security at the building, was shot and later pronounced dead at the hospital. Two civilians were also injured, though their current conditions have not been disclosed. Authorities have not released their names.
Shooter found dead on upper floor
The gunman barricaded himself on the 33rd floor, according to the NYPD and responding agencies. He was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. NYPD officials confirmed the weapon used was recovered on-site, and no other suspects are being sought at this time.
Tamura is believed to have traveled from Las Vegas, where he legally owned firearms and held a concealed carry permit. Investigators are still working to determine his motive and any possible connections to the location or victims.
A swift and coordinated police response
The shooting prompted a massive response from NYPD, FBI, bomb squad, and counter-terrorism units. Park Avenue between East 51st and 52nd Streets was shut down, and residents were warned to stay away from the area for several hours.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul issued briefings expressing condolences for the fallen officer and praise for the speed and professionalism of the NYPD and emergency services.
“We lost a hero tonight,” Adams said. “An officer who served and protected even when he was off the clock.”

Offices closed and investigation underway
The building remained closed Tuesday as investigations continued, with police securing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and collecting forensic evidence. The NFL, Blackstone, and KPMG issued statements offering support for affected families and confirming their cooperation with law enforcement.
While officials believe the threat has been contained, they have not yet confirmed whether Tamura had prior connections to the building or anyone inside. Authorities are also exploring whether mental health or ideological factors played a role in the attack.
A city in mourning
The NYPD and city leaders have promised a full investigation and pledged support to the officer’s family. Flags across city buildings are expected to be flown at half-staff.
As New York continues to process yet another tragedy, tributes have begun pouring in on social media for the unnamed officer and those injured in the shooting. For many, it was a chilling reminder of the risks officers take—whether on duty or not—and the unpredictable threats facing even the most secure spaces in the city.
