An Oak Creek man was sentenced to prison after driving drunk and causing the death of a St. Francis teacher.

Troy Vaillancourt, 28, received a 32-year prison sentence on Sept. 11 with a credit of 308 days of time served, according to online court records.

Vaillancourt will serve 20 years behind bars and 12 years of extended supervision, records said. There are multiple conditions to his extended supervision including loss of operating privileges for five years, completing 100 hours of community service each year of supervision, maintaining absolute sobriety, complying with random drug screenings and more.

Vaillancourt entered a guilty plea on June 9 to one felony count of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, according to online court records. The court subsequently found him guilty and remanded him into Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department custody at that time.

According to the complaint

On Dec. 6, 2024, Cudahy Police found a Honda Civic with severe damage to the driver’s side door along with a Chevrolet Trailblazer with its front end severely damaged in the area of East Van Norman and South Lipton avenues.

A teacher with the St. Francis School District, Michelle Engman, was driving the Honda and died from her injuries on Dec. 8.

Vaillancourt identified himself as the driver of the Chevrolet and said he’d just left work.

“I’m 90% sure I blew the stop sign then hit her,” he told an officer, noting he was “probably speeding.”

Vaillancourt had a 0.169% blood alcohol level. While the legal limit in Wisconsin is 0.08%, Vaillancourt had two previous OWI convictions meaning he had to remain under 0.02%.

A GoFundMe for Engman was started by her sister-in-law to assist with medical and funeral expenses. It raised $31,777 with a $19,000 goal.
