OKMULGEE ― State agents have been called in by police to investigate a homicide about 100 miles east of Oklahoma City.
On Monday, Sept. 8, officers with the Okmulgee Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at a home near Kennedy St. and North Miami Avenue.
Police said they found Chadwick Thompson, 37, suffering from a gunshot wound at the home. Officers said they attempted life-saving measures on Thompson, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
OSBI spokesman Hunter McKee said Okmulgee police requested the agency’s assistance around 4:45 p.m. Monday. Agents with OSBI found out Thompson had been in a fight with another man prior to the shooting, McKee said, and authorities have questioned that man.
Apart from assisting with the investigation, OSBI would not clarify why the agency had been asked to help.
As of Wednesday, there were no arrests and no suspects, according to OSBI. McKee said the agency is now awaiting a final decision from Okmulgee County District Attorney Carol Iski, who will determine what charges could be filed in the case.
In recent years, Okmulgee made national headlines after four men’s bodies were found shot and dismembered in the Deep Fork River in 2022. A local salvage yard owner disappeared and was later arrested in Florida and charged with murder in that case.
