Otsego County schools plan to reopen this week after ice storm

Must read

GAYLORD — School districts in Otsego County are planning to re-open this week as power restoration and cleanup from the March 29-30 ice storm continues.

The Johannesburg-Lewiston Area School District (JLAS) is planning on classes resuming Thursday, April 10.

“The Johannesburg building has power and all systems are coming back online as of last night (Monday). The maintenance team is working today (Tuesday) to get our buildings ready. Staff will be reporting (Wednesday) and students Thursday. We are still an active staging area for power restoration, so we have found a way to share our space outside with the hundreds of hard-working crew here to rebuild Johannesburg,” said JLAS Superintendent Katy Xenakis-Makowski.

In a note to parents, Xenakis-Makowski said a transportation plan will be forthcoming.

“We know our buses will not be able to access all locations, so alternate plans will need to take place. We are hopeful our drivers can establish some batch pick-up points to make it as easy as possible on families,” she added.

Gaylord Community Schools have tentatively set Thursday for schools to reopen. However, superintendent Jim Cracraft said school buses will probably not be operating.

“Opening on Thursday is the plan right now but that could change. We want to make sure it is 100% safe for students to return. Transportation is probably not an option for the rest of the week,” he said.

Superintendent David Harwood said Vanderbilt Area School is set to reopen on Wednesday, but school buses are a question mark as of Tuesday afternoon.

Heather Glasby, principal at Gaylord St. Mary Cathedral School, said classes are set to resume Wednesday but the buses will not be running at that time.
