Outdoor store Orvis closing dozens of locations; are any Orvis stores closing in PA?

Must read

Camping is a popular fall pastime in the Delaware Valley — the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has received 10% more campground reservations this year — but you’ll perhaps have to soon find another store to shop for outdoor goods, as camping store Orvis is planning to close dozens of locations.

Pennsylvania is home to the second-highest number of Orvis stores in the nation, meaning these closures could have an impact on campers throughout the Philadelphia region.

Here’s what we know.

Orvis is closing dozens of stores

According to several published reports, Orvis, a chain that is nearly 170 years old and known for selling fishing, camping and hunting gear, will close 36 locations by mid-2026.

Of the pending closings, 31 are full stores and the other five are outlets.

Orvis spokesperson Simon Perkins confirmed the closures in a news release from SGB Media.

“Like many in retail, Orvis’ business model faced a sizable shift with the introduction of an unprecedented tariff landscape. For more than a century and a half, we’ve been committed to being leaders in our space for customers and partners, beginning with our industry-leading fly rods still crafted in Vermont today.,” Perkins said in the statement. “To ensure a durable brand and model for decades to come, we are focusing on our core strengths and making the difficult but necessary decision to rescale the business by tightening our assortment and reducing our corporate store footprint.”

Is Orvis closing any stores in Pennsylvania?

According to The Street, Orvis hasn’t publicly identified which locations would close.

Industry watcher Retail Dive notes there are 70 Orvis locations across the nation, including 64 stores and seven outlets, which means nearly half of all Orvis stores in America will close.

It stands to reason Pennsylvania may lose one of its Orvis stores.

“The brand said it will focus on wholesale — including its existing partnerships with more than 550 U.S. independent retailers and ‘several’ national outdoor retailers,” according to The Street. “The latter includes Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s and Sportsman’s Warehouse.”
